The best cheese fondues in Geneva

There is no better way to experience Swiss culture and conviviality than sharing a traditional fondue among friends and family.

Fondue is a traditional Swiss dish of melted cheese served in a communal pot (caquelon or fondue pot) over a portable stove (réchaud) heated with a candle or spirit lamp, and eaten by dipping bread into the cheese using long-stemmed forks. It was promoted as a Swiss national dish by the Swiss Cheese Union (Schweizerische Käseunion) in the 1930s, and was popularized in North Amer-ica in the 1960s. In Geneva, fondue is moitié-moitié (half-half) made with Gruyère and with Fribourg Vacherin cheese.

Here are our recommendations for the best fondue restaurants in the most beautiful city of Lac Léman that will enchant your palate and make your win-ter’s nights memorable.
MOST CONVIVIAL – Bains des Pâquis

This popular local hangout offers great fondues (including a champagne-based version) at reasonable prices in a very informal setting right next to the lake.

Don’t expect any frills, but for a good night out with friends and family (or a family lunch) this venue is unbeatable.  We love spending time in their hammam and spa (and even taking a quick dip in the icy lake) on a freezing winter’s eve-ning and then wrapping up warm and sitting outside next to their fire drums, sharing their fondue and glühwein to warm up. Watch out for those cheese hangovers!

Be sure to book your fondue in advance.

The most popular fondue (as voted by locals) in the city is by far the one served in Café du Soleil in Petit Saconnex.

If you are looking for a place to go and you’re feeling adventurous about tasting different fondues, this is the place to be. Besides the traditional moitié-moitié fondue, there are unusual variations such the 100% chèvre (goat cheese) fon-due or the fondue tomate (with tomatoes) which is served with boiled potatoes rather than bread. Friendly, simple and informal, the owners are welcoming and offer an overall authentic experience. Either of the two locations (one in Chêne-Bougeries and ne in Plainplais) are easily reached by the city tram ser-vice.
