The Saint-Jean Cliffs Trail is located in a forest area in an exceptional wild setting that is home to fauna and flora that deserve the utmost respect from passing visitors. The trail runs along the Rhône between the Pont Sous-Terre and the Pont de la Jonction.
For several centuries, the cliffs at this site remained almost bare, while vineyards extended over the slopes, forming like immense steps between the river and the Saint-Jean plateau. Photographs from 1900 testify to a much more open landscape than today, with far fewer trees and a promenade widely open to the river and surroundings. Over the following century, the forest gradually developed, completely covering the old vineyards. The current walk, running almost at water level, now offers a wild and romantic setting beneath a thick canopy of vegetation.
