Best picnic spots in Geneva

Geneva is incredibly beautiful and you don’t have to look very hard to find stunning, natural, peaceful places of great beauty. During the summer there are many spectacular spots that are perfect for organising a romantic picnic with great views over the lake and the Swiss Alps. We are lucky in Geneva to have great parks, offering a quick escape from urban life!

Summer is our favorite time of the year in Geneva because the city is so lively and cheerful. There are many terraces for a nice early evening drink, many places to go for a quick dip in the lake and most importantly, there are a lot of great picnic and barbecue spots. We are lucky in Geneva to have some great parks, which offer a quick escape from urban lifestyle.

PARC BARTON AND PERLE DU LAC
This park is situated on the Right Bank of the Lake and offers the best view of the city, the lake and the Mont Blanc in the background. It is the perfect backdrop for your sophisticated picnic. It is conveniently located a few steps away from the Kempinski and President Wilson Hotels and on the way to the botanical gardens. The wife of Rolex founder and former owner of the park, Hans Wildorf, aptly named the park the Pearl of the Lake and its name suits it perfectly.

In the summer, the Perle du Lac is also the venue for the free open-air cinema “Ciné Transat”.  People bring their pillows, blankets, lounge chairs (you can rent them for CHF5 each), and they happily sit on the grass by the flowerbeds. The atmosphere of the entire park is so convivial, yet still quiet and peaceful.

WHERE: Rue de Lausanne 128
OPEN: Throughout the year,  open 24 hours
FACILITIES: A cycle path and foot path.  A restaurant and buvette

PARC LA GRANGE
On the left bank of the lake, in the trendy Eaux-Vives neighborhood, you’ll find the beautiful Parc La Grange with its impressive rose garden that contains more than 200 different varieties of roses.

Taking a walk in the Park La Grange is a great way to find peace, quietness and to surround yourself in nature while being couple of minutes away from the bustling main shopping streets of Geneva. It is the largest green space in Geneva and the park with the most history. Indeed, there are even a few roman vestiges hidden in the park.

During the summer, the Park La Grange hosts a large variety of cultural and musical events. There is the great free musical event called “Musique en été”. All summer but especially from August 6th until August 12th, there will be a free concert in the park every evening, from jazz, to reggae, music lovers will love it. There is also the Théatre de l’Orangerie, which was built in 1856 in a neo-Greek architectural style, which throughout the summer is hosting 8 plays, dance shows and 4 great parties with eclectic DJ sets featuring funk, soul and house music. The Théatre de l’Orangerie is also a great place to grab a drink after work on their beautiful pop-up terrasse.

WHERE: Quai Gustave-Ador
WHEN: Monday – Sunday: 7 am to 9 pm
FACILITIES: Splash pool in the summer, free deck chairs in the summer, theatre, Ella Fitzgerald stage, dedicated dog area, public barbecue area and public toilets.

PARC BERTRAND
Located in the neighbourhood of Champel, not far from the city centre, this park is perfect for a romantic, peaceful picnic. Since the park is located in a residential neighbourhood, it is always peaceful and quiet. Some days you can almost have the entire park to yourself. Nature surrounds you and you can truly relax. The park is so quiet and in harmony with nature, it is hard to believe it’s so close to the city. Perfect for taking a daytime nap!
In Parc Bertrand, which dates back to the 18th century, you can admire beautiful threes such as sycamores, giant sequoias, birch threes from Himalaya and Austrian black pines.
The children will love to splash in the small splash pool and to make new friends in the playground while the grown-ups will relax under the shade of one of these beautiful trees. Children can play and run safely. They can even slide down the trunk of an elephant, what’s not to like?
Even our four-pawed friends are welcome provided they stay on a leash. They can also run freely and make new furry friends in the designated dog areas at the entrance of the park.

WHERE: Avenue Peschier, Champel
WHEN: Open 7/7 and 24 hours
FACILITIES: Urban fitness equipment open to all, a dog park, pubic toilets, a splash pool and during the summer free deck chairs.
