Artist:
Kidist Hailu Degaffe, known as Degaffe, is a visual artist born in 1969 in Ethiopia. After obtaining a degree in English and literature in 1992 from Addis Ababa University, she worked in various sectors: aeronautics, journalism, marketing and education. She then decided to follow her vocation to become an artist and, in 2005, she completed her studies at a private art school in Addis Ababa.
A highly committed artist fighting for women's and children's rights, Degaffe participates in exhibitions with works known as Endurance. Her stories reflect the tenacity and hope of a life free from fear and need. In 2008, she joined thirty contemporary Ethiopian artists to create a 100-metre-long canvas in Addis Ababa as part of a campaign against early marriage in Ethiopia organised by the United Nations.
She has been living in French-speaking Switzerland since 2009. Some of her works are part of the collection of the National Museum of Ethiopia and the Brulhart Gallery in Geneva.
