Stanley Donen was born in 1924 in America's South. He loved and practiced dancing from his earliest days, and dreamed of appearing on Broadway. He arrived in New York at the age of 16 and immediately became friends with Gene Kelly. The latter became his mentor before becoming his Hollywood partner, at MGM, in three wonderful musicals: On The Town, which revolutionized the genre, the famous Singing in the Rain and the melancholy It's Always Fair Weather. Meanwhile Donne proved that he had a style of his own by leading, without Kelly, in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. He then made Audrey Hepburn shine in Funny Face (his final musical) and Charade (a thriller), directed comedies (The Pajama Game, Indiscreet, The Grass is Greener), the most beautiful of which was Two for the Road in which he found his melancholic fibre. He died this year at the age of 94.
