Concert of Latin American nueva canción.

The MIR celebrates International Women’s Rights Day by offering a guided tour followed by a concert. The tour, entitled MIR au féminin, highlights in particular the figure of Marie Dentière, one of the earliest feminist lay theologians.
The tour will be followed by a concert centered on nueva canción, a South American movement of politically engaged folk songs that emerged in the 1960s, notably carried forward by artists such as the Chilean Violeta Parra and the Argentine Mercedes Sosa.
Nueva canción is widely recognized for the major role it played in social movements in Latin America during the 1970s and 1980s. It addresses themes such as poverty, imperialism, democracy, human rights, and religion, while also denouncing dictatorships and femicides, among other issues. Women musicians associated with this movement were often confronted with censorship, forced into exile, and even subjected to torture by military dictatorships.
Rich and diverse, this music draws on traditional Latin American folk melodies and, through the power of its lyrics, stands at the heart of revolutionary and reformist movements. It will be performed by Argentine singer-guitarist Mariana Juarez, accompanied by accordionist Eugénie Gallay and violinist Pamela Hekimian.
