Journey to Hope is the title of the 1990 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film by Swiss director Xavier Koller. It tells the story of a migrant Kurdish family that abandons kin and country to try to get into Switzerland; a story of worlds divided, of uprooted families, of exploitation, of goodwill, of a brutal fate where human and natural forces end up destroying their every hope. It is now also the title of a new opera commissioned by the Grand Théâtre from German composer Christian Jost, whose distinctive orchestral writing has the epic proportions of film music and defines a new genre somewhere between opera and symphony. Hungarian film and theatre director Kornél Mundruczó’s socially and dramatically innovative projects are all over the stages of Europe, at the intersection of reality and its representation. In his staging of this opera, he reminds us of the daily reality of all those who are forced to leave their homeland and are waiting to be someone again, of all those who have no land under their feet, no country in their dreams and only paradise lost in their eyes. Voyage vers l’espoir is an opera for Geneva: yesterday city of refuge and today, home of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees.
