Old Arsenal

In the heart of the Old Town, feel the presence of the Old Arsenal.

The famous cannons are a reminder of when Geneva had to defend itself against its neigbours. Today, the building houses the State Archives.

The ancient arsenal was a granary built in the 17th century and later used as a military storehouse until 1877. The five cannons exhibited under the archways were still in use at the turn of the 19th century. The pillared building and its cobbled floor now houses the Geneva State Archives. On the walls you can admire three beautiful frescoes, the work of Alexandre Cingria, depicting key periods in Geneva’s history.
