To mark the 200th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven’s death, Daniele Gatti is conducting a cycle of the composer’s symphonies, across two seasons.
The second concert in the Beethoven Cycle highlights a decisive turning point in Beethoven’s compositional evolution.
With the Symphony No. 2, still firmly rooted in the Classical tradition, Beethoven reveals a radiant energy and remarkable inventiveness despite the onset of his deafness. It is a work imbued with unexpected optimism, in which one already senses the triumph of human will over fate, a theme that would remain central to the composer’s music.
That expressive power reaches its full stature in the Symphony No. 3, “Eroica.” With its unprecedented scale and dramatic intensity, it redefines the symphonic genre and heralds a new aesthetic in which individual expression and narrative ambition open the way to Romanticism.
