Lecture by Niklaus Manuel Güdel
Ferdinand Hodler had a strong affinity for pre-Renaissance Italian painting, particularly the work of Giotto. This lecture invites you to follow the painter through the museum and in the footsteps of the old masters in Italy to understand what Hodler himself sought in his precursors of the Trecento and Quattrocento. It will address, in particular, the question of gesture, to which Hodler attached paramount importance in his own work, readily drawing on religious gestures for his large-scale Symbolist compositions.
