Why do women often suffer from hunger even though they produce a large share of the world’s food? In this documentary, Action de Carême - Fastenaktion explores changing gender roles through examples from Guatemala, Burkina Faso, the Philippines and Switzerland. The stories show how dialogue, mutual learning and solutions rooted in local realities can transform power relations and advance the right to food over the long term.

Mary Mulinge was one of the first women to build improved wood-burning cookstoves in the rural region of Kitui, Kenya. These stoves require only half as much wood for cooking as open fires, which emit significantly more CO₂. Caritas Kitui, a local organisation working with Action de Carême - Fastenaktion, supports families in replacing their open fires with improved cookstoves. This allows them to cut their wood consumption – and the associated costs – by half. The cookstoves also help reduce deforestation, lighten women’s workload and lower the risk of respiratory diseases.
