This workshop offers an introduction to the Shetland fiddle tradition, taking participants on a fascinating journey to the Shetland Islands, where Scottish and Scandinavian influences meet.

Through the learning of reels and jigs, participants will explore the essential features of this distinctive fiddle style: bowing technique, rhythmic precision, phrasing, and articulation in support of dance. Particular attention will be given to the energy of the playing and the close relationship between music and bodily movement.

Led by Maurice Henderson, a leading figure of the Shetland music scene, together with the musicians of Haltadans, the workshop is primarily intended for string players, but is also open to instrumentalists of all backgrounds who wish to explore this Celtic repertoire through an approach that is both demanding and accessible, firmly rooted in a living tradition.
