In a 16 square metre studio, ‘Elle’ whimsically fends off boredom; she dances, sings, drinks, eats and plays with an unbridled impropriety that only her solitude affords. The banality of everyday life, when embraced without moral barriers, conceals a wealth of guilty, selfish and thoroughly enjoyable pleasures. How can we simply be happy, a little each day? By letting emotions and impulses flow freely through us? A shameless playground, the young woman's bedroom becomes a grand enterprise of self-entertainment until a stranger breaks into her home. The visitor's intrusive presence puts an end to the gentle madness that permeates the space. The solo becomes a duo. With L'Autre comes the need to channel behaviour. Madness and fantasy wither away. When the self-image takes over, raw spontaneity is swallowed up by the desire to please. Moving from solitude to cohabitation, Ainsi soit-Elle reveals the closeness of emotions that are at odds with each other: freedom versus control, carefree versus anxious, joy versus rage.
