Brad Mehldau and l'Orchestre de Chambre de Genève
The most influential jazz pianist of the last twenty years’ (The New York Times), Brad Mehldau has forged his own unique path.
Judith Baubérot, conductor
Raphaël Merlin, conductor
Brad Mehldau, piano
Musicians of l’OCG
Mehldau originally composed Variations on a Melancholy Theme for fellow pianist Kirill Gerstein, before performing and recording the work himself. Commenting on the combination of classical form and jazz harmonies in the work's musical language, Mehldau wrote: ‘I imagine it as if Brahms had woken up one day and had the blues.’
And Brad Mehldau is not the only guest of the evening! Judith Baubérot, the first winner of the OCG prize for a particularly brilliant conducting graduate, conducts The Hebrides, a hauntingly melancholy evocation of the Scottish islands that so enchanted Mendelssohn.
