What is Ladysmith Black Mambazo?
Ladysmith Black Mambazo - The Sound of Africa is a documentary about Joseph Shabalala and his music group
Joseph Shabalala was a singer from South Africa.
He was born in 1940 and died in 2020.
He created a famous group: Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
This group sings without instruments, only with the voice.
This style is called isicathamiya, a traditional South African music.
Joseph discovered this music in town, after the death of his father.
He decided to form his own group.
Together with his singers, he made this music famous the world over.
The group became a symbol against apartheid, an unjust system in South Africa.
Joseph was also friends with Nelson Mandela.
The group sang with Paul Simon on the Graceland album, which made them very famous.
Even when he was famous, Joseph always remained close to his country.
Today, his sons sing in the group.
