Concert – April 12 at MEG – REBETIKO and other traditional music from Greece
By Trio Mnémé
A true celebration of the art of Rebetiko, this concert takes the audience on an emotional journey through the paths of this urban Greek folk music, which has gained worldwide recognition today.
Emerging in the early 20th century, Rebetiko is deeply rooted in personal and collective histories, often marked by upheaval. It reflects the stories of rural people leaving their villages for the bustling cities of Athens and beyond, as well as the experience of refugees from Asia Minor returning “home,” carrying with them sorrow and nostalgia. From this convergence, a unique musical tradition was born—one that resonates strongly with contemporary migratory movements.
On stage, Ourania Lampropoulou, a virtuoso of the Greek hammered dulcimer santouri, Evgenios Voulgaris on oud, and Avgerini Gatsi on vocals will perform emblematic pieces of Rebetiko, inspired by original recordings from 1922 to 1940. Through passion and artistry, these musicians share their deep connection to this tradition, revealing its links to various regional Greek musical styles. This concert offers a rare opportunity to explore an essential part of Greek history and soul—a timeless moment where each note weaves a living bridge between past and present.
