Sangeet Quartet - Dance and music from North India
Classical Indian music and kathal dance at eMa on September, 26th 8pm
The artists of the Sangeet Quartet are dedicated to introducing audiences to the treasures of saṅgīta: in India, the refined blend of song, instrumental music, and dance. Trained between the Indian peninsula and Europe, their approach combines the rigor of traditional learning and performance contexts with extensive experience on Western stages, developing sensitive and accessible tools to give everyone a taste of the subtleties of a fascinating artistic universe. Kathak, in particular, is a dance form born in the temples and palaces of the Mughal Empire, which, through a wide range of gestures (mudrā) and facial expressions, tells divine and secular stories drawn from the myths, legends, and poetic imaginations of the Indian subcontinent. The plucked (sitar) or bowed (dilrubā) string instruments interact with the drums (tabla and pakhawaj), while the voice, alternately melodious or percussive, plays its ornaments or chants the bols – rhythmic syllables. From their encounter is born a jubilant game of questions and answers, where improvisation plays a major role.
