Boris Charmatz and Dimitri Chamblas' very first show, À bras-le-corps, heralded the liberation of choreographic codes at its premiere. The year was 1993. Boris was 19, Dimitri 17. They shared training at the Lyon Conservatory and a fierce desire to break free from them.
Far from the formatting of bodies, the distinctions between choreographer and performer, and the distancing of the audience, it was in a square surrounded by chairs that they infused their libertarian youth into a dance in search of renewal. The duo initiated a desire to place dance at the heart of the audience and no longer in a face-to-face encounter.
Since then, the piece has toured continuously. In thirty years, it has conveyed every emotion and graced every stage. The dancers' flexibility has evolved and their power has been confirmed. The audiences have changed but have remained close. Today, in the ring where the bodies of the two dancers compete, play, and juggle, a joyful power emanates that continues to defy time and gravity.
Hosted in collaboration with La Bâtie - Geneva Festival.
