Do you like clowns? Not sure they like you back. In any case, with Beckett, the worst is always certain. Which often, in the theatre, gives the best.
So much has been said about clowns, without ever solving the riddle. For example, their unstoppable failure. The repeated failure of the clown, like a mise en abyme of existence. Failure to the point of exhaustion, you can't get out of it. So here they are striving to interpret faithfully the nonsense of the non-narrative. This is Beckett's work, the worst is a precious ingredient, or at least a certain worst. "To the face/the worst/until/he does/laughs," writes the Irish playwright. "Cap au pire" is one of his last texts, a formidable work of disintegration, exhaustion, literature in a state of exhaustion. The show that La Dolce Compagnie draws from it is a tightrope walk that ventures into the nebulous boundaries of the creative process.
