Ensemble Temenos
The Concerti Grossi, Op. 6, are an iconic series of twelve concertos composed by Handel towards the end of his career, between 1739 and 1740.
Baroque Rendezvous
Duration: 1 hour
Each concerto is structured in several movements, alternating between solo passages (concertino) and orchestral passages (ripieno). These concertos had a lasting influence on the subsequent development of concertante music among all English composers of the late 18th century and represent a synthesis of French, Italian, and German styles, marking the pinnacle of the genre.
Originally conceived to serve as interludes in oratorios, the Organ Concertos, Op. 4 are the first of their kind and literally astonished all listeners of the time. As Sir John Hawkins testified in 1776: "A fine and delicate touch, flying fingers, and the immediate execution of the most difficult passages serve to praise lesser artists: these were not to be found in Handel, whose qualities were of a far superior kind: the astounding mastery of his instrument, the fullness of his harmony, the grandeur and dignity of his style, his prolific imagination, and the fertility of his invention were virtues that had absorbed all lesser achievements."
