VORTEX ENSEMBLE . ROJO . 4 WORKS . CONCERT

Vortex Ensemble presents four works to discover in this exceptional concert, as a preview of the NFM Festival in Wrocław, Poland (May 2025).

At this concert, the Ensemble will premiere a new work by rising Polish composer Monika Szpyrka (1993), whose music—often exploring concealment, acoustic microstructures, and the balance of simplicity and complexity—has already featured in major European festivals.
Vortex will also perform Contraccolpo (2020) by Fernando Garnero, an intense piece for two hybrid instruments. Two performers engage in a sonic duel using white noise as a central element—one manipulating a condenser microphone and snare drum, the other playing a speaker embedded in a saxophone, reversing traditional roles of instrument and electronics.
Daniel Zea presents his unsettling work The Love Letters? (2018), for two performers, webcams, facial recognition, electronics, and video. Here, facial expressions and gestures generate music and text, questioning the emotional depth of algorithm-driven communication.
Finally, Alfaque Rojo (2022) by Arturo Corrales, written for Vortex, unleashes raw energy. Inspired by tidal flows and the metal band Meshuggah, the piece layers polyrhythms through overlapping cycles for bass clarinet, electric guitar, string trio, and electronics.
