This exhibition is inspired by artist and filmmaker Derek Jarman (1942–1994) who, after learning of his HIV-positive status, moved to Dungeness where he created Prospect Cottage, a house and garden that became his place of life and work. Defiant Gardens brings together artists who view the garden as a space of emancipation, within utopian, decolonial, and feminist perspectives.
