« Fjord », Vilde Frang and the Geneva Chamber Orcherstra
Telluric vibrations ahead!
Vilde Frang is one of today's most original and inventive violinists, her interpretations brimming with fresh ideas carried by a lyrical breath in constant motion.
Why Fjord? It's a reference to Norway, where both the inspiration for this evening, Vilde Frang, and some of Raphaël Merlin's ancestors come from. Via the North Sea, off the coast of Denmark and Sweden, then the Baltic Sea, it is possible to sail through Norwegian waters to St Petersburg, the port city where the evening's other two pieces were composed. The first, a symphonic poem by Rimsky-Korsakov, the great orchestrator of the time and Stravinsky's teacher, sets to music the underwater adventures of the musician-navigator Sadko, the hero of an old Russian folk tale. The second is a suite from the ballet that made Stravinsky immediately famous: composed in just a few months, The Firebird is tangible proof that he had integrated and even surpassed the art of his master.
