With Nik Bärtsch, everything is percussion: the dynamism of his touch, the precision of his placement, the restrained energy of his repeated strokes. We find ourselves somewhere on the borderline between the mechanical and the organic, between metronomic regularity and the constant reinvention of a living sound. Between each isolated note, between the muffled hammer and the metal string, there seems to be an electrical relationship, a magnetic field, a call for a shared vibration. Even more than an identifiable musical tradition, somewhere between jazz, minimalism and funk, this music is nourished by Japanese Zen culture, and invites us to adopt an attitude of listening and awareness: "be ready for anything, and expect nothing".
