Frank Martin Cinderella
This is a piece which, in a more favourable context (it was premiered in 1942), would have met with an altogether different success, so much so that it is addressed to both children and adults. With the sound palette of his slowly matured language, Frank Martin brings out the most contradictory dimensions of the tale, the humour and cruelty of the Grimm brothers' world. "It needed seriousness, comedy, mystery, tenderness and malice, perverse seduction and the purest love. The children's story has a spiritual dimension: "it's more than a simple love story, it's the story of a soul attaining supreme joy after the afflictions of this earthly world". Between humour and seriousness, the play is ultimately above all initiatory.
