Because we were unable to record their extraordinary voices, we have long forgotten the names of Francesca Cuzzoni, Faustina Bordoni and Anna Strada del Pò. The scores remain, but the voices of those for whom they were written have disappeared. Gone? Not quite, because the arias composed for them carry their memories in their hollows. As well as having been the attraction without which no composer could have achieved any success, the vocal talents of the prime donne made it possible to develop melodic writing of wild expressivity. We sail from the impulse of love to the darkest despair, from anger to jubilation. Sandrine Piau is part of the great tradition of expressing strength and vulnerability in the same voice.
