On 12 May 2026, International ME Awareness Day, public buildings and landmarks around the world will be illuminated in blue. The #LightUpTheNight4ME campaign aims to raise awareness of the serious illness ME (myalgic encephalomyelitis; also known as ME/CFS) and the situation faced by those affected.

ME is a chronic, neuroimmunological illness that can lead to severe disability. Most sufferers are no longer able to work, and some are permanently confined to their homes or even to their beds. Those most severely affected require care, including tube feeding. Even the slightest physical or mental exertion can lead to a massive deterioration in their health.

The disease remains under-researched and is largely unknown within the healthcare system. Due to the lack of recognition of the condition, most sufferers receive no help and many are reliant on support from family members. Many patients are forced to live in seclusion, often in the dark, as light, noise and other stimuli can exacerbate their symptoms.

The blue lighting sends a visible signal of solidarity, hope and greater social recognition. It draws attention to a condition that remains invisible to many and gives a voice to those affected.
Through #LightUpTheNight4ME, cities, institutions and individuals around the world are taking part in this important awareness campaign. Together, they are sending a message to secure greater attention, research and support for people with ME.
