Live show by Satch Hoyt | La Bâtie x Afrosonica

In collaboration with La Bâtie, the MEG welcomes multi-instrumentalist Satch Hoyt for a live musical performance as part of the Afrosonica - Soundscapes exhibition.

Flautist and percussionist Satch Hoyt presents Un-Muting, a live musical performance as part of the Afrosonica – Soundscapes exhibition at MEG. This immersive journey examines the role of music and sound in African societies and their diasporas, and runs until January 2026.

Un-Muting is a semi-acousmatic performance that highlights the sounds of ancient African instruments which Satch Hoyt has brought back to life by delving into the collections of the British Museum and the MARKK Museum in Hamburg. Drawing on recordings made during the European colonial era as well as on physical artefacts (drawings, paintings, tennis rackets, truncheons, boxing gloves, etc.) and original soundscapes he composes himself, Hoyt seeks to contribute to the forging of a new, inclusive Black cultural identity. Straddling research, testimony, imagination and fantasy, he charts a sonic map of the global African diaspora in which past and future, lived experience and imagination converge. On a musical level, Hoyt boasts an impressive pedigree: he has composed alongside Grace Jones, collaborated with Japanese composer and percussionist Stomu Yamashta, and played the flute on Louise Bourgeois’s track OTTE.
