NATE WOOLEY'S MUTUAL AID MUSIC + SWISS IMPROVISERS
Season 24-25
Trumpeter and composer Nate Wooley is a key figure in the avant-garde, and one of his most interesting musical projects is “Mutual Aid Music”.
Through this project, which could be described as “ethico-musical”, Wooley leads the members of the collective to take the measure of their “gifts” and to ask themselves, at every moment, how the use of this gift will affect the community of which they are currently members. Wooley's compositional system is based on constraints designed to take musicians out of their comfort zone, and leave them with very pure decision-making choices. By combining formal material with a playing “ethic”, Wooley asks musicians to question what they bring to the ensemble as human beings first and musicians second.
In collaboration with the AMR, Konnekt has taken the initiative of bringing this brilliant and unifying project, which turns the relationship to improvised performance on its head, to the local scene, by proposing a mixed occurrence of Mutual Aid Music, inviting a large series of Swiss improvisers to perform alongside part of the original New York line-up.
