An encounter in a haunted street: The history of spiritist séances in Geneva told by Virginie Bercher

In the middle of the 19th century, Geneva joined the worldwide wave of spiritualist séances. Amidst turning tables and mysterious knocking, mediums tried to communicate with the great beyond...

Virginie Bercher, author of the only historical study of Spiritism in Geneva, recounts how this movement, which sought to reconcile science and the afterlife, took root in Geneva society in the mid-19th century.
She tells this story on the edge of the Plaine de Plainpalais, near the ghost of a house that hosted séances with the medium Hélène Smith/Élise Müller and was one of the landmarks of spiritist culture in our city.
This event (in French) is linked to the podcast series "The Martian Voyages of a Genevan Queen, or The Playing Spirits of Hélène Smith/Élise Müller" (also available in English) on the hypercity.ch platform, which tells the story of this Geneva medium who became a "supernatural superstar".
