Skiss! Carine Bovey
In an increasingly violent world, the artist felt it was important to share moments of joy. That is why she chose to portray them in drawings imbued with gentleness.
For this exhibition, the artist has selected a series of drawings made entirely with eyeshadow. “Skiss”, meaning sketch in Swedish, captures fleeting moments from Carine Bovey’s daily life. In celebration of Pride Month, it was essential to present the Polaroid XL series, which features portraits of people close to the artist, representing diverse orientations and identities.
Her small-format sketches, blending graphite and makeup, were inspired by her travels. The artist often sends close friends quick sketches of landscapes or details that caught her attention. These days, receiving handwritten cards has become increasingly rare. This sense of materiality is slowly disappearing in a world where everything is digitized.
This intimate exhibition reminds us of the importance of relationships and human connection in the real world.
Biography
Born in 1985 in Beirut, Carine Bovey lives and works in Geneva. She studied at the School of Decorative Arts from 2001 to 2006 and has been represented by Gowen Gallery since 2019. Alongside her artistic practice, she has worked extensively in the press and advertising, particularly in the luxury and fashion sectors.
In her work, she explores social and identity-related themes through various lenses and mediums. In her paintings and drawings, she frequently uses unconventional materials such as saffron and eyeshadow, alongside oil paint.
In line with the biophilia hypothesis, she highlights the parallels between human anatomy and plant life, as well as our instinctive affinity for life that connects us with all living beings. She is also deeply interested in the origins of life, and in scientific and medical advances.
Making what might initially seem taboo both beautiful and acceptable is one of her core artistic missions.
