Symphony Milanese Style
The Birth of a New Musical Genre
This concert celebrates the early days of the concert symphony, a genre that emerged independently in Milan around 1730 when the city was a vibrant center for instrumental music. The concert symphony quickly gained popularity, eventually spreading to other major European cities.
Under the direction of internationally renowned baroque violinist Enrico Gatti, students from the HEM will perform symphonies and instrumental works by Milanese composers such as Giovanni Battista Sammartini, Giuseppe Sammartini, Antonio Brioschi, and others active in Lombardy. The program also includes a piece by Swiss composer Joseph Franz Xaver Dominik Stalder, transcribed by musicology students from the University of Geneva.
