Damn war!
War is a masquerade, a contest of bloated egos, a philosophical scandal. With Ubu Roi, Wars project, the Studio d'Action Théâtrale takes up the (hot) subject and enthrones the most ignoble and cowardly king the scene has ever known.
"I'm going to war and I'll kill everyone." With Ubu, things are clear: war is just a killing machine. A parody of Macbeth, a merciless satire, "Ubu Roi" (1895) has lost none of its corrosive charge. On the contrary, it resounds like never before while childish puppets dance on the rubble of our world. This grotesque and yet tragic dimension, which mixes acting and cruelty, Gabriel Alvarez restores it by offering a fairground setting to Jarry's fable. To break the military rhythm, so quick to make the crowds march, the actors grab instruments and mischievously orchestrate the deadly sarabande. Inveterate hucksters, Mother and Father Ubu thus become the (dis)loyal Mrs. and Mrs. of a capitalism that crushes souls and bodies and precipitates us into its downfall. Shakespeare was right, "the whole world is a stage", but it is a scene of war. And those who are agitated there are very ill. The Studio d'Action Théâtrale digs into the ruins to extract what remains of life.
