Swisstainable in Geneva
Some Geneva-based tourism businesses participate in the Swisstainable programme. The applicable participation level is indicated for each business, helping you identify providers involved in the programme during your stay.
The "Swisstainable" program
Swisstainable is Switzerland’s tourism sustainability programme. It focuses on the development of businesses and destinations across various areas of sustainability. It also highlights businesses and destinations that meet the programme’s requirements and continue to improve through concrete measures. Swisstainable is not a standalone sustainability certification.
Participation in the sustainability programme is open to all tourism businesses and organisations in Switzerland. To reflect different starting points and levels of commitment, the programme is divided into three levels.
Geneva is committed to sustainable tourism
The Geneva Tourism & Conventions Foundation participates in the Swisstainable sustainability programme and has achieved Level III – leading status. Swisstainable brings together businesses and organisations from across Switzerland’s tourism sector. Through our participation, we are committed to the continuous sustainable development of our organisation and are implementing the following concrete measures:
- Reducing and monitoring waste by raising team awareness and introducing a monitoring system.
- Creating inclusive communication materials, including videos in French Sign Language and International Sign.
- Reducing our digital footprint through awareness-raising, training, responsible use of equipment, and the reuse or recycling of devices.
Level III – leading
These businesses meet the basic Swisstainable requirements and possess at least one valid and recognized sustainability certification or proof that has undergone external verification and covers the relevant sustainability dimensions in accordance with the Swisstainable criteria.

Level II – engaged
These businesses meet the basic Swisstainable requirements and additionally provide valid evidence recognized by Swisstainable (individual or combined evidence).
The individual evidence recognized for Level II – engaged is subject to external verification.

Level I – committed
These businesses meet the basic Swisstainable requirements: a commitment to sustainable development, a sustainability assessment, and an action plan including at least three planned measures.
Level I – committed is not an external sustainability certification.
