Seated on a sofa, Sonia is leafing through a file. Trained as a lawyer, she now works as legal counsel for a financial group, while her husband Henri, an astrophysicist, is preparing to publish a study on the dark matter halo in galaxies. Meanwhile, their six-year-old son, unable to fall asleep, is whining at the end of the hallway… The situation deteriorates when Hubert, Henri’s boss, and his wife Inès suddenly appear — even though Sonia and Henri were convinced they had invited them for the following day.
The astonishing boldness of this comedy lies in presenting three variations of the same situation. Three scenarios leading to the same outcome: one way or another, the social veneer always ends up cracking, allowing the conflicts between the couples — as well as within the couples themselves — to surface.
For the four performers, the play represents a remarkable feat, demanding great virtuosity. It is also a fine challenge for director Claude Vuillemin, whose recent productions have included Une pièce espagnole by the same playwright and Oh les beaux jours.
Today, the theatre of Yasmina Reza is translated into more than thirty-five languages, and performed and published throughout the world.
