The Khene, Polyphonic Bamboos – The Echo of the World’s Sounds

The MEG and the Archipel Festival are pleased to welcome Sombat Simla, an adventurous khene artist. The khene is a bamboo mouth organ found in East and Southeast Asia. A master of this singular instrument, Sombat Simla carries on a traditional practice while also experimenting with new musical processes, including striking and unexpected imitations of scenes from daily life. Through these explorations, his music expands our listening experience of this ancestral instrument, both gently melodic and powerfully resonant. The concert will be followed by a discussion with Yasuhiro Morinaga and Win Chujitarom.
This event continues MEG’s musical series, MEGAFOLK, dedicated to the pathways of sound—its traditions and its transformations. Each concert is followed by a conversation with the artists, offering insights into their music, their instruments, and the contexts in which their practice is rooted.
