John Hebert concert at the AMR at 9 p.m.

A leading figure on the New York jazz scene since the mid-1990s, John Hébert embodies an approach deeply rooted in the jazz tradition while remaining resolutely focused on exploration. As a composer and bandleader, he has developed a musical language in which dissonance and spontaneity form an organic relationship with melody and groove.
Influenced in particular by his apprenticeship with the legendary pianist Andrew Hill, who encouraged him to assert a unique voice, Hébert has established himself as a central figure within a vibrant New York community, where listening, empathy, and risk-taking are essential.
In keeping with the spirit of the AMR’s “New York is Now” series, his work reflects this collective energy—demanding and uncompromising—where every musical encounter becomes a shared space for invention.
