For this spring tour dedicated to France, the SJSO will perform, together with Swiss cellist Samuel Niederhauser, the First Cello Concerto by Camille Saint-Saëns. The program opens with the music of a pioneer: Lili Boulanger, who in 1913 became the first woman to win France’s most prestigious composition prize of the time and who passed away five years later at just 24 years of age. As her health left her little hope, she composed D’un matin de printemps and D’un soir triste, two works that complement each other like light and shadow.
As for Claude Debussy, he spent the summers of his childhood in Cannes and later transformed these memories into one of the most famous “marine studies” in music history: La Mer.
