Photo exhibition "Life at the foot of the Jet d'eau"
Exhibition Photography, Association Photography Genève, En face du Jet d'eau – Quai Gustave-Ador, Geneva, 1 April to 4 May 2025
The Jet d'eau is one of the most emblematic symbols of Geneva. Represented hundreds of thousands of times on postcards, in tourist brochures and on all official media, it has become a frozen image, almost cliché.
But Demir Sönmez invites us to rediscover it from a completely different angle: not as a static icon, but as the living theatre of everyday life in Geneva. For nearly a year, he immersed himself at the foot of the Jet d'eau, returning day after day, in the sun or rain, with or without tourists, at dawn or dusk, to capture the essence of this life that develops there.
His goal is set on faces and moments: improvised picnics, solo musicians, couples who kiss, spontaneous weddings, tourists amazed, but also the Genevois who, in their daily routine, They pass without even looking up at this plume of water.
This work is an invitation to look differently at this familiar monument, to grasp its human vibration. Through these images, Demir Sönmez reveals that the Jet d'eau is not only a symbol — it is a meeting point, a breath, a scene where Geneva life plays out every day.
