SAHRA HALGAN
Somaliland indie rock
Warm voices and hypnotic riffs. When Somalia meets Gnawa and rock, a modern trance is born, between sand and sweat, deep roots and electric shocks. A sound that warms, captivates, and awakens.
Sahra Halgan is much more than a singer: she is the voice of a people, that of Somaliland, a country in the Horn of Africa that has declared itself independent since 1991, but is still seeking recognition. In the 1980s, while engaged in the fight against dictatorship, she became "Halgan"—the fighter—a resistance figure carried by her poignant songs.
Exiled in France, it was in Lyon that she surrounded herself with traveling musicians—Aymeric Krol, Maël Salètes, Régis Monte—to create a musical bridge between continents. Together, they forged a hybrid, free sound, rooted in Somali melodies, shot through with rock energy and Saharan echoes.
Her third album, Hiddo Dhawr ("Preserve Culture"), celebrates this living, constantly evolving heritage. It's also the name of the cultural center she founded in Hargeisa to keep memory and music alive. Between fierce tradition and flamboyant modernity, Sahra Halgan makes the world sing.
