Marco Di Piazza, born in Rome in 1961, is an Italian sculptor and painter celebrated for his portrayal of the human form in motion. He studied art and architecture in Florence, establishing a solid foundation for a prolific career that intertwines classical techniques with contemporary themes.
In 1990, Di Piazza established his art gallery in San Gimignano, Tuscany, where he first began presenting his work. His early creations primarily featured stone and bronze, but over time, he transitioned to iron and steel sculptures. These modern materials enabled him to translate his intricate drawings into three-dimensional forms, resulting in stable yet lightweight pieces suitable for both indoor and outdoor environments. Unafraid to explore space and scale, he has worked on sculptures ranging from delicate 20-centimetre studies to monumental six-metre installations.
In this exhibition, the selected works aim to highlight the artist’s ability to distill the human figure to its purest form, creating compositions that balance strength and lightness, solidity and void.
Di Piazza has exhibited extensively in Italy and internationally throughout his career. Notable exhibitions include solo shows at the Italian Cultural Institute in Cologne (2006), the European Center of Culture in Rolandseck, Bonn (2007), and participation in the Venice Biennale’s "Italian Artists in the World" pavilion (2011).
Since 2003, Di Piazza has resided in Bonn, Germany, while maintaining strong ties to San Gimignano. He continues to work as a sculptor and painter in both countries, and his artworks are featured in public and private collections in more than twenty nations worldwide.
