Art, a universal language: 100 years ago – Matisse, Mondrian, Magritte

The Bibliothèque de Carouge invites you to (re)discover the pioneers of modern art with Leonor Cuahonte, PhD in art history, on Wednesday, September 16, 2026 from 7 p.m. to 8:15 p.m.

The Bibliothèque de Carouge and Leonor Cuahonte, PhD in Art History, invite you to a series of five lectures on the History of Art.

Discover the diverse facets of modern and contemporary art in the first session, which will focus on the two movements that gave birth to modernity. The following sessions will allow you to delve into the lives and works of legendary artists, and also to discover how female artists have gained popularity since Frida Kahlo's rise to superstardom!

• January 28: Art Nouveau – Art Deco
• March 25: Women – Painters, Sculptors, Architects
• May 6: Pop Art Icons – Warhol, Koons, and Hockney
• September 16: 100 Years Ago – Matisse, Mondrian, Magritte
• November 4: Frida Kahlo and the Tradition of the Day of the Dead

Leonor Cuahonte holds a doctorate in art history from the Sorbonne. She specializes in modern and contemporary Mexican architecture. An exhibition curator and independent researcher, she has studied and worked in Mexico, France, and Germany. Since 2013, she has taught art history at Culture & Rencontre in Lancy and, more recently, at Communes-Ecole in Collonges-Bellerive and Ecole & Quartier in Versoix.

About this session:
Over a century ago, Matisse, Mondrian, and Magritte revolutionized modern art. This lecture revisits these visionary pioneers whose works continue to influence our perception today.
